I have been making the same paper darts since 1980. My father taught me. He learned how to make them when he was a kid 50 years ago in Chile. In the past I have adapted the dart by using a pin rather than a toothpick as you show. I also used to scorch the tip using the stove top. It hardens the tip. YOu have a great site. It's nice to know that other people enjoy the dart as much a I have.

other things to try are the quills from a prickly pear cactus. Leave on the puffy part of the quill and shoot through a pen or pellet gun.

Brilliant site mate, just brilliant! I've recently got into blow-gunning, this is a brilliant site- i made a paper dart like you said - i dont think i'll bother with any of the hitech stuff on other site, involving supergluing two scalpel blades onto a dowel rod...

The paper dart rock!!!
Thanks for sharing it!!!

I am very happy you took the time and effort to teach and give a chance to the next Generation to have fun with this great toy that is both cheap and effective... It should be an Olympic sport most definately... I remember making these when I was a child... My late Grandfather taught me how to do it... I have forgotten... Until now, and I thank you for this. :D

Hey man nice site!! My dad taught me how to make these same darts when I was like 14 years old..I dont know who taught him..but they are great!! I taught my daughter how to make em too..she shoots the cats with them :(..My dad taught me that before you lick the end..to bite using my front teeth on the paper..to make small little bites back and forth side to side on the surface of the paper..to make it thinner, and hence making it stick better. We also make them with very light thin headless nails..we secure them with masking tape..my dad has hit a crow once with one of these LoL..anywayz, i never thought anyone knew about this stuff..its nice too see a site devoted to it. Thanks!

My son was just playing with my blowgun that I purchased several years ago and he did not have any darts so I showed him how I use to make my own darts when I was young. They were just like yours. I then checked the internet to purchase new darts and found your webpage. What a coincidence. We use to have wars with them when I lived in Hawaii back in the 70's. All my friends made darts. It was just common practice back then. I shouldn't say this but we made them with pins in the tips and they would stick into people. We used them alot at the High School football games and would shoot them out into the fields. We use to use the long plastic pixie stick straws that were about 3 ft long since we couldn't take our pipes to the ball games. We use to make darts with streamers out the back or a whole bunch of small tiny pieces of paper inside the dart so that it would look like a comet going across the field. I haven't read any of the other letters but looking forward to it when I get done writing this.

One of my friends knew how to make something similar to this but not as good.By the way cut off the tip ,and crush the end ,then cut it at an angle.
This version of the tip is capable of cutting right through someones face if you do it right.

These blow guns are relly cool I have been making them for aboout a year now. I have found theat if you attach a long steel wire to the end of a very short parer cone that it will go a far distance and will penitrate up to 1/2 an inch of wood although you will have hard time getting the darts back without destorying them

these things are so cool. i have found that folding the ends and taping it with a bit of electrical tape. it makes them really hard and they sting like a beotch. i also tried hooking the pipe to an air compresser and it makes them shoot like 200 feet. thanks so much for the info i see yeers of entertainment ahead.

Wonderful little piece of homemade fun. Right on par with paper-match rockets and clothespin guns. My housemate is already jumpy when he has to have his back to the room. I also have a quick question/observation. I believe some types of sales receipts use the same paper and they're of similar dimensions to the half page magazine blanks. Perhaps they would make blanks even easier to produce; just cut at the desired legnth from your spool of receipt paper. Testing will have to ensue. Thanks for spreading the info.

This is a great idea, I am an Activities Director at a nursing home.Every Wednesday I get on the internet to find some ideas for our Men's Group, I found you on a bubble wrap site. I spent all day making paper darts, about 300 in all, and at 2:00 I blew up a bunch of balloons and pinned them to the cork board in our dinning room. then I called all the men down for Men's Group. We had Paper Darts all over the place We had A great time not to mention we popped alot of balloons. This is something that i will use over and over again, Thanks again

Hey Bro, I just bumped into your site and I think it's very cool. You're one of the few people I know that does so many "different" things. And I just remembered my father was teaching my children to do darts close to 2 years ago. Very cool.

I made darts very very similar to the ones described on this website. We made them with magazine paper, and a piece of scotch tape to keep it from coming undone... I have a fun story about shooting at cars, four of us were shooting at cars at night and one hit a guy with his window down.... he almost killed us, and of course got us all in trouble with our parents... so dont shoot at cars! My favorite is strike anywhere matches at night, rolled into the tip. one other tip is not to shoot at birds, unless you really do want to injure them, cause it is very possible, I learned that the hard way. have fun!!!, stay safe, wear eye protection.

Hi, I've just searched on the internet for this phenomenon because i used to do this 5 years ago.
Indeed here in the Netherlands they are quite popular, and to be honest i haven't seen them anywhere else. But i don't go often to other countries though.
So yeah it was really cool to do, but now in my opinion the kids are playing less with these "shooting pipes" and they play more on their computers or football.
An other type of ammunition we used was from the common snowberry. we used the white balls from the shrub, they are around 10-15mm (0.4-0.6") big. So they are the ideal size for the pipes.
And the noobs (like i was) always used this berry because i couldn't make arrows well. :( :P
Oh yeah, we only used the beige, sand colored, pvc-pipe and no copper pipes.
It was really cool to do and it reminds me of good times, but it's a pity i don't see the kids playing with them anymore, in this vacation of 8 weeks i have probably seen them shooting for one or two days.
It was cool to visit your site, because i did not have thought that there was a site about this whole paper darts thingy. :)

Ha! you thougth it was something rather unknown? Here in Dutch everybody knows how to make it, has done it in his childhood and probely still have a pvc-pipe lying somewhere around. I learnt it from my dad, like 80% of the children do, and at a age of 10, its very strange if you can't roll dart in 10sec. The tings which are nice to shoot at are; birds, cars with open window:P and open windows of houses. in that order -best first.
The most used paper(by aprox 90% of children) is the veronica, a TV magazine.
